"I love rachet TV, I don't see what's the difference between this show and the other VH1 shows," is what I'm hearing. I've watched these shows in the past, but haven't watched the new series on VH1 about the members of four different sororities within the NPHC, simply because I do not support it. Here's why...
People are having an issue with those who oppose to watching it. I'm reading comments like "Greek Haters", or "It's okay to watch one and not the other? Have several seats." But the reason behind the decision is quite simple.
1) When watching these blacksploitation shows, we realize that not all women from these ridiculous shows are like this. They are simply representing themselves (and whoever it is that they've had intimate relations with). No one's reputation is harmed but their own. But, in the show Sorority Sisters, these women are putting not only their name on the line, but their National Organizations' reputations are being hog tied and slid around in filthy mud. People who may not have the opportunity to see black greeks on their own campuses, now have a negative view of greek life.
2) This is from my own perspective when I say this: When these women misrepresent the other members of their organization, they're stating, without words, that this is what every other member is like. The issue I have with this is, although many of us may not come in contact with a basketball wife, or run in circles that involve those in the hip hop lifestyle, many of us DO KNOW and have access to someone who is involved in a Black Greek Sorority. These lawyers, doctors, judges, teachers, CEOs, homemakers, etc., are now having their own personal reputations looked down upon. When you watch the women of Sorority Sisters, essentially, you're watching everyday woman. Unfortunately, everyday women do not behave this way.
So, yes, I do have a problem with a few people who have decided to sell their sororities out for a few coins, and misrepresenting them at the same time. I do have an issue with someone deciding that this would be a great show (Which organization refused you membership, boo boo?). I do have an issue with others being misinformed about a society that actually does more good than bad. I could go on and on but oh well.
Until next time,
