Autism is present in our home and in our lives and we're just trying to cope with it, while Tre learns to cope with life.
As you all may know, my eldest child, Tre, has Autism. Although he is highly functioning, we still face challenges. One of his first signs of Autism was him banging his head. He would do it to fall asleep. When he was a newborn, obviously he couldn't lift his itty bitty head, so he would cry and fuss until he was placed in his swing. He needs movement to be soothed.
During that time, we had crappy neighbors who would bang on the ceiling and call the cops anytime we sneezed too hard. I know what you're assuming, some old lady who has extra time on her hands. Nope. They were two young brothers who decided to live together. And every time we would turn on the swing. Their brooms would thump on my floor. Neighbors are jerks.
Fast forward to today, and I'm thankful for our neighbors. My son has only gotten worse with his head banging. And we've been in communication with them to let them know our situation. They've been more than understanding. Even more concerning, my 7 month old daughter, Stacie, has started. We're nervous. We're completely frightened. One child with a disability? Okay, we'll manage. But, two? I may not have the strength. Other than the head banging, she shows none of the other early signs. But, every time she starts banging her head, we mourn a little. And I snap us out of it by stating that she has perfect eye contact, she responds to us, and she's been attempting to say "Mama" since she was 2 months old. We're just hypersensitive to this disorder. Let's just wait and see.
Until next time,
