I had an amazing time thrifting with my mother over the Thanks Giving Weekend, and I managed to find a few cute items that I see myself actually wearing. I didn't walk out of the store with 10 random items. Instead, I managed 2 really great things: an ALDO handbag and a thin hot pink paten leather belt. I've got a thing for accessories.
When I go shopping at a thrift store, or any store for that matter, I put my items of interest through a checklist.
1. Is it damaged?
Why are you even looking at it? Put it back!
2. Does it fit?
I can have all of the best intentions in the world when purchasing an item that requires some sort of alteration, be it the garment in question, or myself. If I lose 5 pounds, I can.... NO! Put it down and walk away. Don't create extra work that you don't see yourself finishing.
3. Do I already own something like it?
Unless you've run the other item down, or you will run it down due to constant use, put it back! But, if it's unique, then by all means, have at it.
4. Will it fit in your wardrobe?
Welcome a new purchase that's cohesive with the rest of your closet. My new-ish belt will be best friends with my hot pink scarf. I can't wait to introduce them in an outfit.
5. What is it's life expectancy and care requirements?
Dry cleaning bills? 3 wears and then it needs to be retired? Well, that's no fun. Check the tag and the quality before you adopt someone's gently used item, usually there's a reason why such fantastic items end up at the thrift shop.
Until next time,
