A Minimalist Closet for the Working Woman

My best friend has recently graduated from NJIT and has been recruited to one of the top firms in her field. SO SUPER PROUD OF YOU!!

(Enter "that’s my best friend" video)

So now that she’s entering the professional/business world, it’s time for her wardrobe to be a little less college girl, to a little more working girl. It’s almost like the wardrobe of a working woman, but it’s less uptight and not so serious.

For this project, I am channeling my inner Parisian city girl. My bestie will be working in New York City, why would I send her out there dressing as a colorful tourist? I’m obviously trying to make her a target if I do so. So, let’s stick to the basics:

Black, Grey, Navy, and White.
Top, Bottoms, Jacket, Shoes

Tops include the tradition White button down shirt or a silky blouse
Bottoms include black, grey or navy dress pants or a no nonsense scuba pencil skirt
Jacket? Easy. Black tailored blazer, duh. Can choose a cashmere cardigan for the alternative.
Shoes? Whatever she loves, just nothing too high to catch the train! Just be comfortable, and don’t clash!

So with that, let’s get to work! I’ll add in an LBD for cocktail hour and accessories (like a promise her I would) to see what works well with what.

If she purchases a few staple pieces, she'll be able to mix and match and create so many different looks. It'll free up some space in her closet if she sticks to just her core pieces. If my bestie chooses to purchase a trendy item, I suggest that she purchases the accessory version of the trend so she doesn't make a purchase that will cost her quite a bit, and most likely take up prime real estate in her closet within a year.

Let’s also keep in mind that there are times when my friend will be “in the field” so I will give separate looks.

My friend's profession requires steel toe Redwing boots and at times a hard hat. So, how do you make this look cute and still a bit feminine? Fitted items and red liptick! Try and earring cuff and a trendy scarf. Shazam!!! Feminine fireworks amongst the men folk. Watch your back girl.

What are some pieces in your closet that you can't live without? Are they multifuntional? Do you like to purchase trendy pieces, or do you like to look for the classics?

Happy Dressing!
