For my 26th birthday, I wanted to try a few new things. On my list of to do's is coloring my hair. I figured I should tackle this one first because it's super easy, and has an immediate "I DID SOMETHING" effect. Box color, 40 developer, aluminum foil. OH MY! Although I'm enjoying my color now, it took some mistakes and phoning a friend to figure out how to get it where it is.
My hair color is the traditional 2B, or at least that's what the braiding hair suggests. All I see is dark brown or black. I made an attempt to color my hair in college but it didn't come out the way I had planned. Life's like that I guess. So, here I am, six years later and ready to dye again.
I consulted with my hair stylist (my mother) to see which color I should go for. I told her that I wanted a golden blonde of sorts. Something warm. I didn't know what I wanted I just wanted it light...but not platinum blonde light. Ultimately we went with Softsheen Carson Dark and Lovely Fade-Resistant Rich Conditioning Hair Color Honey Blonde 378.
The Results:
Not golden blonde. Not "Honey" Blonde. Not blonde at all. This is a complete sham!! What a waste of time and money! I'm talking to YOU Dark and Lovely! It came out auburn. It's pretty if I had wanted this color, but I don't. Therefore, it's awful. My mother told me to wait two weeks and then we'd try again. I immediately started doing my research a.k.a. calling friends. I'd ask if I should go to a salon and get it done professionally. Some said "yes" while others didn't respond. I then asked a friend of mine who is blonde and she informed me that box color is never the answer. The developer is no where near strong enough to pull the color out. She told me what steps I have to take to get my hair the way I'd wanted it.
Two weeks later, my mother gave me a shopping list of things to purchase in order to dye my hair again: Color of my choice, 40 developer, a color brush, and neutralizing shampoo.
Once it came time to recolor my hair, I had grown attached to the auburn shade that was already in. I told my mother that I like my current color, and that I might not be ready for BLONDE! Instead, I asked if she could simply add highlights to add depth to what's already there. She went into my pantry and pulled out the Reynold's Wrap and told me to have a seat.
The Results:
I really like it! I told her that I'll probably go even lighter next time. Ahh...we'll see. I'll give you an update in about two months.
Do you have a hair color experience that you're dying to share? I really want to know in the comments below.
Until next time,
